Why do people have favorite sports teams? Why cheer for people that you don't know and root against others?
We identify ourselves with a team's identity based on characteristics, or its attributes. Even a name/label that seems to be either a part of us or where we feel we can comfortably belong to. You feel as if you are a member of an extended family, and belong to something larger than yourself.
"My favorite sports team is the Lakers because they just are amazing, Kobe is the best!" said Courtney Warner.
Some people usually root for the teams located where they grew up. A team can be a part of the culture of a town and region, and consume the time and money of the die hard fans.
Some fans support a team because the team was already supported by another family member, and they are continuing the tradition.
"Win, lose, or tie - Giants fan till I die," said Emily Snook. "I was born a raised a Giants fan."
Family and friends gather around events, plan meals and parties in support of their favorite team. Nothing will stop a true fan.
