This Week in Mustang Sports

A weekly recap of sports teams at Foothill High School. Coaches, captains, and players are encouraged to send detailed team information and stats to sports@fhspress.com.

Boys Basketball

Though Friday the 13th is said to be a day of bad luck, the boys basketball team more than held up in their first PVL (Pioneer Valley League) game against Colfax, winning 70-60. Though star player Michael Bryson wasn't able to play due to an ankle injury, the boys were still able to come through with a win in an intense game. The score went back-and-forth throughout the game, with Colfax leading in the first quarter. But, with a little push from Coach Drew Hibbs, the Mustangs improved to 15-3 overall on the season. Come support the team at their next league game against Bear River tonight.

Girls Basketball

Last Thursday, January 12, the girls basketball team lost to Colfax 56-54 after a tough game. Even though they lost, they still put up a fight to the end, putting up a good amount of points. Lawrell Dobbins, averaging 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, kept up the intensity by motivating the rest of the team to keep pushing.

Last Saturday the freshmen and sophomores really stepped up their game in the Frosh/Soph tournament. As a whole the team did exceptionally well with nearly all JV wrestlers medaling. Isaiah "Tank" Banks took second for the heavyweights. Nazar Smal also took home a third place medal in the 128's weight class. Malik Powell worked all the way up to the finals and walked away with a first place gold medal in the 160's. The Tim Brown Tournament, one of the biggest tournaments in the state, is going on this weekend, January 20-21, at the Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento.
