Overdue books costly to library and students alike

Books are being checked out and kept out for far too long.

Students at Foothill High School are checking out library books and checking them in late. Some students even have books checked out back from when they were in elementary school.

The students won’t be able to graduate, unless the books are paid for or returned. What is causing students to turn in their books late?

“Because I misplaced the book so I couldn’t find it and I was sick the whole week,” said Benny Castro.

“I forget I checked it out and Mrs. [Joanne] Ligamari has to remind me,” said Susannah Anderson.

At the library’s check-out desk, there’s a whole pile of notices which will be send out. Not only are the books overdue, but they're holding up the line of students who want to read the books. There have been situations when a student will renew a book over and over again, until he finally confesses he has lost it.

According to the school’s handbook, the school will fined for each day the book is overdue. Teacher-librarian Joanne Ligamari has been thinking about fining implementin because the money will benefit the library. The library could have better computers, more and updated books. There could be more nook devices to hand out to students.

"They're the bane of my library existence," said Ligamari.

However, Ligamari has been nice enough to not have the students be fined for overdue books, yet.
