Summer job earnings: Spend or save?

Don't wait too long to start looking for that part-time job.

Jobs are a good way to save money. But because summer is coming up high-schoolers and college students are going to have to compete over jobs. College students will be more mature but high school students are going to want to get jobs too.

To get your worker’s permit you have to be 15½ years old. Most jobs won’t hire you until you are 16. Some places, if they are small enough, will hire you at 15½. Summer jobs are kind of a big thing because once you get to that age your parents think it’s a good time for you to have more responsibilities. During the summer you don’t have to deal with school and keeping grades up.

Summer jobs can be fun, depending on where you’re working. If it’s somewhere you like going, it will be fun because you’re working, but making money at the same time. During the summer you can save money, or you can spend it. Depending on where you’re working and how much you make, you can split the two.

You could also start getting a job now and saving so when summer does come you have a little bit of play money and then you can just make more. There is a process of getting your workers permit and you have to go through your school and the job has to be okay with your age and all of that. The process that comes with getting your worker’s permit at Foothill High School is that you have to go to the career center and talk to Kiffin Yan. He will help you get though the whole process of getting your worker's permit.
