Now serving: Culinary classes prepare lunches for teachers and staff

The culinary class this year has experienced significant changes as Erin Tobias, culinary arts teacher and newest member of the Foothill Mustangs family, has taken the culinary program into a new direction that focuses on preparing and catering food. This change in the culinary program will enable students to learn how to prepare, serve and sell food as well as give others the opportunity to get a taste of some of the foods prepared by culinary students.

The money made from selling the student-made food, according to Tobias, will be “put back into the program so kids can make more elaborate foods and it will also be used toward FCCLA," she said.

"FCCLA is the Family Career Community Leaders of America," Tobias continued. "It is necessary for the CTE culinary program. The money will pay for traveling expenses, food, hotel and entrance fees so that kids can participate for free.”

Students in the culinary classes are extremely excited for the CTE program and for the new direction that the culinary program has taken, as Shayna Le Cain explains:

“I think it’s a lot more fun to get more involved with the business aspect of it," said Le Cain, a senior at FHS. "It’s definitely better to learn about really what goes on in the real world because we’re not just cooking in this class, we’re learning actual career skills."

The future is looking bright for the culinary program as students from both Culinary One and Culinary Two, with the help of Tobias, will be preparing and catering for many events further on in the school year.
